ERDC’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory awarded construction contract for new climatic chamber facility

Published July 31, 2020

HANOVER, N.H. – On July 9, 2020, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center announced that the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) was awarded an Unspecified Minor Military Construction Authority (UMMCA) contract to build a climatic chamber facility on the Hanover, New Hampshire, campus.

Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in November 2020, with an anticipated completion date by December 2021. A ground breaking ceremony for the new facility is planned for later this year in October; however, a formal date has not yet been established.

The climatic chamber facility consists of a modular series of environmentally controlled chambers to support full scale testing of equipment and systems for military and civil works applications in extreme weather conditions. To meet current and emerging DoD and National Science and Technology needs, CRREL is replacing a smaller 990 square foot facility with the larger modular test and evaluation space, which includes rooms capable of not only maintaining a minus 50 C environment, but also simulating wind and precipitation events.
