VICKSBURG, Miss. — ERDC's Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) hosted the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Dams Sector Research and Development (R&D) Workshop, Jan. 31–Feb. 1.

DHS is the lead agency for the Dams Sector and, working through its partners, has continuously recognized the important role of R&D efforts in reducing risks and enhancing resilience across the sector. As the Dams Sector-specific agency, DHS collaborates with Dams Sector partners to coordinate efforts aimed at characterizing capability gaps and technology needs; maintaining awareness of relevant technologies and research products; and identifying opportunities for improved collaboration regarding ongoing or future R&D activities.

The workshop identified and evaluated relevant research efforts currently being conducted across government and academia, which may address R&D capability gaps identified as part of the 2011 Dams Sector Annual Report.

Participants reviewed current capability gaps in greater detail to better understand what future research efforts were needed to further address these needs. The workshop provided an opportunity to identify and characterize new capability gaps and technology requirements from the perspective of owners and operators.

The workshop was attended by 72 federal, state, local, private and academic personnel.
