ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Several ERDC sites recently sponsored STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) teacher workshops for middle school and high school teachers using Material World Modules (MWM) kits.

The MWM kits are a series of inquiry and design modules that encourage students to discover the interconnections between science, technology and society.

At ERDC Headquarters in Vicksburg, Miss., scientists and engineers (S&Es) have participated in four workshops covering the Sports Materials, Concrete, Biodegradables, and Biosensors MWM kits.

The ERDC Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) hosted a workshop for Champaign and Urbana, Ill., area middle school STEM teachers featuring the Composites and Sports Materials modules.  Two of CERL's S&Es participated in the workshop, along with the 13 teachers from local schools.

In Alexandria, Va., the Topographic Engineering Center (TEC) sponsored a workshop that featured the Sports Materials MWM kit and was attended by 20 middle school teachers and six S&Es.

Since October 2010, ERDC STEM outreach has sponsored 10 workshops that have helped teachers promote STEM subjects to several thousand students.
