Hanover, N.H. — The Office of the Secretary of Defense recently released its “Report to Congress on Arctic Operations and the Northwest Passage.” Members of the ERDC Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) staff served as subject matter experts in the report’s preparation.

The report addresses national security objectives, required capabilities, basing infrastructure, command structure and the need for icebreaking capabilities. CRREL was listed as a U.S. Army resource that “develops solutions to military challenges in the Earth’s cold regions.” The Hanover laboratory was specifically cited for providing relevant Arctic capabilities for regional security cooperation and humanitarian assistance/disaster response and defense support of civil authorities.
