John Wesley Powell commanded Battery F, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery, and in 1869 was the first man of European descent to successfully navigate the Grand Canyon. His portrait, painted by Edmund Clarence Messer, is in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
