The Engineers at Vicksburg, Part 20: Ax and saw, pick and shovel
Capt. Frederick Prime, chief engineer of the department, was charged with overseeing the encircling of Vicksburg, which coupled with the naval blockade on the Mississippi River to effectively cut off communications and supply to the city and Confederate troops.
