The Engineers at Vicksburg, Part 19: From Surge to Siege
A detail from George W. Tomlinson’s 1963 Map of Vicksburg shows the position of Union forces as they surrounded Vicksburg. On May 19 and again on May 22, Grant hurled his army against the city’s defenses only to be hurled back with the loss of 4,000 men.
