Following one of the longest and most complex campaigns ever waged in American military history, Vicksburg was compelled to surrender on July 4, 1863. At the Warren County Court House, the “Stars and Bars” of the Confederacy was replaced by the “Stars and Stripes” symbolic of Union victory.
