Army Cold Regions lab participates in Sea ice Experiment - Dynamic Nature of the Arctic (SEDNA)
BEAUFORT SEA, Alaska (April 8, 2007) – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Arctic researchers Jackie Richter-Menge and Bruce Elder install an Ice Mass Balance buoy during the National Science Foundation’s SEDNA field campaign conducted April 1 -15, 2007. According to the SEDNA website, “The field campaign has been designed to investigate sea ice stress - strain rate and redistribution relations at nested scales from the individual ridge scale, 1km, 10km, 100km to regional (seasonal ice zone in the Beaufort Sea) scales.” The Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory’s Ice Mass Balance Buoy program supplied near real-time data for SEDNA. Buoy Components included an above ice acoustic sounder, under ice acoustic sounder, and a temperature string extending from the air, through the snow cover and sea ice, into the water with the temperature sensors located every 10 cm along the string.
