Mission

The Environmental Engineering Branch conducts research and development of technologies to better understand, predict, treat and control contamination associated with all types of environmental media (air, water, soils, sediment, etc.) and structures. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, scientists and engineers develop bench, pilot and prototype systems for the remediation of contaminants associated with CE and DoD facilities.

Represents the ERDC as appropriate with the Office, Chief of Engineers, Corps Divisions, Corps Districts, Army, and other DoD and Government agencies in matters pertaining to environmental restoration and hazardous waste engineering research and development.

Functions

  1. Develops experimental methodologies for assessing the performance of environmental engineering technologies for toxic, hazardous and radioactive wastes
  2. Develops innovative technologies for the control and treatment of toxic, hazardous and radioactive wastes.
  3. Develops strategies and technologies for the management, treatment and disposal of contaminated dredged material and remediation of contaminated sediments.
  4. Provides expert/consultant support in assigned areas of R&D within and outside the Corps.
  5. Performs special studies in support of remedial investigations/feasibility studies.
  6. Maintains the Hazardous Waste Research Center (HWRC) facility for ERDC.
