Environmental Systems Branch, EEC

Published Oct. 6, 2016

Mission

The Environmental Systems Branch conducts basic and applied research to develop environmental sensing, characterization and monitoring capabilities necessary to quantify environmental site conditions and trends at local and regional scales. Develop, integrate, and apply various remote sensing and related geospatial systems and approaches to assess environmental conditions and trends. Develop models for prediction and visualization of dynamic environmental site characteristics. Conducts environmental sensing research to identify, model, and mitigate the effects of the environment on novel sensing techniques that address environmental and military requirements. Ranges from development and demonstration of in-situ sensors for detecting and quantifying environmental contaminants in soils, sediments, and groundwater, to development of ground-based and airborne remote sensing systems for unexploded ordnance detection, minefield detection, and smart weapons development. Develop hardware/software systems for the rapid collection, analysis, and visualization of sensor data for environmental quality and military applications.

Functions

  1. Develop and evaluate hydro-acoustic based detection and mapping systems for submersed aquatic vegetation and related surface features.
  2. Develop and apply various survey and mapping capabilities and geospatial data analysis applications for characterization and assessment of large river basins, watersheds, and ecoregions.
  3. Develop analytical methods for 3-D landscape modeling, analysis, and scene simulations.
  4. Develop automated environmental site monitoring and data acquisition technologies using instrumented field stations, sensors, and imagery sets.
  5. Develop hardware/software systems for the rapid acquisition and visualization of environmental site characterization data.
  6. Develop and demonstrate new sensing and sampling technologies that support the Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS).
  7. Develop electro-optical, electromagnetic, and electrochemical sensors for rapid detection and characterization of hazardous materials in the environment including unexploded ordnance and chemical contaminants.
  8. Develop modeling, signal analysis, processing, and display techniques for rapid extraction, visualization, and interpretation of information from a variety of environmental and military sensors.
  9. Identify and model the effects of the environment on the performance of optical and electromagnetic sensors to enhance in-situ detection of subsurface chemical contaminants, and detection and identification of unexploded ordnance (UXO).
